Reef Diving

We are pleased to be able to offer you some of the finest dive sites in the Caribbean, ranging from shallow beach diving to deep canyons and the walls of Cozumel. For the photographer, shallow dive sites give you endless bottom time, so while our guides search for points of interest, you concentrate on you shots. The aquatic life is ideal for macro photography. There are thousands of beautifully colored fish along with Turtles, Stingray, Eagle Ray, Moray Eels, Nurse Sharks and lots more. The reefs are so close to Puerto Aventuras that the boat trip to any of the over twenty different dive sites is only 5 to 10 minutes from the dock.

The Inner Reef

A network of patch reefs at depths of 25 to 35 feet with stands of elkhorn coral and formations of boulder, brain and plate corals. Between the inner and middle reefs is an expanse of white sand that is a very controlled area ideal for training dives and student tours. The inner reef is excellent for natural light photography and is home to schools of brilliantly colored tropical fish.

The Middle Reef

Several miles in length and ranges in depth from 40 to 50 feet and is ideal for long bottom time dives. The reef structure is well developed with coral caves and canyons. Elkhorn coral reaches toward the surface on the middle reef in many areas, like the spires of a cathedral. Just out across another white sand expanse begins the well developed outer reef.

The Outer Reef

Beginning at 60 feet in depth and descending through canyons to 125 feet. Popular with experienced divers are sites on the ledge that afford excellent multi-level diving. The outer reef system main attraction are the fabulous canyons and coral caves along with black coral growing as shallow as 90 feet. The Yucatan coast is the nesting area for the loggerhead, green and hawksbill turtles. One of the highlights of many dives is a close encounter with one of these beautiful creatures. Visibility averages 70 to 90 feet with little or no current. Water temperatures ranges from a comfortable 78 degrees in January to tepid 84 degrees in August.
